Boston Public Library

Books contributed by the Boston Public Library. Established in 1848 by an act of the Great and General Court of Massachusetts, the Boston Public Library (BPL) was the first large free municipal library in the United States. In 1839, French ventriloquist M. Nicholas Marie Alexandre Vattemare became the original advocate for a public library in Boston when he proposed the idea of a book and prints exchange between American and French libraries. The Mayor of the City of Boston, Josiah Quincy, Jr., first president of the Board of Trustees, Edward Everett, and his successor, George Ticknor, were also at the forefront of the library’s establishment.

Exact date of printing is not known, though it is generally given as ca. 1460, based on a copy in the Universitätsbibliothek of Freiburg im Breisgau, which has rubrication dates "1460" at the end of volume 1, and "1461" at the end of volume 2. According to Paul Needham, the text is copied from the Gutenberg Bible. See Needham, Paul. "The Text of the Gutenberg Bible", 1987, p. 55.

A French verse Passion written in Northern France between 1465 and 1475. According to Nicole Crossley-Holland, the text functions as an Hours of the Passion for Franciscan use, with each miniature delineating a new Hour. This is the earliest known within a group of three similar manuscripts, and the only one with miniatures. The other two manuscripts are Paris, BN Fonds Francais 190 (from the library of Louis de Bruges, ca. 1480) and Chantilly, Musée Condé 141 (France, ca. 1480)....
